The UK is truly a fake-tan-loving nation. There is now a wide range of convenient tanning options available for home use. For this reason, we've put together our 3 top tips to help you get the most out of your fake tan.

Exfoliate before you apply fake tan

Exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate. This will remove dead skin cells and produce a smooth and consistent surface for the fake tan to be applied to, resulting in an even, golden colour. We also advise you to avoid exfoliators that include oils, since they will just form a film on the body and, although great for sealing in moisture, aren't ideal for tanning.

Change the technique for your face

When it relates to your face, blend the self-tan with a tiny bit of lotion to soften the mixture and reduce the possibility of breakouts. Mix both products - the fake tan and moisturiser - together on the mitt and slowly apply to your face. Use the remaining residual product on the glove from your body treatment to brush over your feet and hands once.

Wear a mitt

In the quest for smooth, radiant skin, a mitt is an important tool. You'll get splotches if you apply fake tan with your hands — particularly if you apply the tan with spread fingers. Tanning mitts, on the other hand, give a level, smooth surface for evenly balanced faultless covering. To make the most of your tan, we recommend starting at your feet and slowly working your way up to your neck using vertical, long strokes. If you're applying fake tan to your face, simply swap the large mitt for a smaller one.

If you're using a fake tan wipe, you shouldn't need a glove or mitt, but you should keep the wipe as level as possible to avoid a streaked tan.
